Guardian Bastille completed a Riot Glass overglazing installation at a Hartford school and daycare facility — adding ballistic and forced-entry protection to the building’s existing glass without removing a single pane.
Overglazing is the reason this project was possible at all. Traditional bullet-resistant glazing requires new frames, new hardware, engineered structural support for the added weight, and weeks of construction. For a school operating on a calendar with no room in it and a budget that has to serve children first, that’s usually the end of the conversation. Riot Glass changes the math.
The Problem: Entry Glass Is the Breach Point
Schools and childcare facilities have hardened everything except the thing an attacker actually goes through. Doors get locked. Access control gets installed. Visitor management gets deployed. Then someone breaks the sidelight next to the locked door, reaches through, and turns the handle.
Standard glazing offers essentially zero delay:
- Tempered glass — clears out of the frame in one to two strikes, leaving a full opening
- Annealed glass — breaks into large shards, no barrier value
- Standard security film — helps against smash-and-grab and flying glass, but is not a ballistic barrier and was never designed to be
For most facilities, security film is the right answer. For entry vestibules, reception glass, and ground-floor classroom glazing at a facility serving children, the threat profile can justify a hard barrier.
The Solution: Riot Glass Retrofit Overglazing
Riot Glass mounts a ballistic-rated panel directly to the existing window frame or wall opening, over the glass already in place. The original glazing stays. No frame removal, no glass disposal, no structural modification.

The system is only as good as its attachment. The panel has to transfer attack energy into the surrounding structure, which means the frame or opening has to be evaluated before anything gets specified. Not every opening in a building needs ballistic protection, and specifying it everywhere wastes money that should go into the openings that matter.
Panels were fabricated to the surveyed openings and installed on the existing frames. All work was scheduled around the facility’s operating hours, and no treated area was occupied during installation.
Results
