Thompson CT School District – Ultra Vision 25 Window Film, Thompson, CT

3M solar window film installation at Connecticut school building by Guardian Bastille

Guardian Bastille installed Ultra Vision 25 solar safety window film at a Connecticut school district, addressing two priorities in a single installation: solar heat and glare reduction in classrooms, and an enhanced safety margin at glass openings throughout the building. The Ultra Vision 25 solar edge safety system was the right specification for a school environment where both occupant comfort and glass safety are daily operational concerns.

The Challenge: Glare, Heat, and Glass Safety in Schools

Connecticut schools operate year-round, and the glass challenges they face are seasonal but consistent. In the spring and fall, low sun angles drive intense glare into east- and west-facing classrooms during the school day — making it difficult to see whiteboards and screens, forcing teachers to close blinds and lose the natural light the windows were designed to provide. In summer and shoulder months, solar heat gain through unprotected glass builds up in occupied spaces faster than HVAC systems can compensate, making classrooms uncomfortable for students and staff.

Glass safety is a separate but equally important concern for school administrators. Standard classroom glass shatters into dangerous shards when broken — whether from accidental impact, weather events, or forced entry. In a building full of students, unprotected glass presents a real injury risk. The facilities team needed a product that addressed both problems without requiring separate installations or different products for different areas of the building.

Ultra Vision 25 Solar Safety Edge System

Ultra Vision 25 is a dual-function solar safety film — it performs as a high-quality solar control film while also holding glass fragments together when a pane is broken. The film’s multi-layer construction rejects meaningful solar heat gain, blocks 99% of UV radiation, and reduces glare to levels that make classroom environments significantly more comfortable and productive. At the same time, its safety film construction holds shattered glass in place, preventing the flying fragment hazard that makes glass breakage dangerous.

The “edge system” application anchors the film to the window frame, which dramatically increases the structural hold of the film on the glass unit. In a standard film application, the film holds glass pieces together but the unit can still push inward when struck. With the edge system, the film is bonded to the frame on all four sides, significantly increasing resistance to penetration and keeping the glass unit intact even under substantial impact force.

For a school where accidental ball strikes, door slams, and other impacts are part of daily life, this level of glass retention makes a meaningful safety difference — without altering how classrooms look or function.

Installation in an Active School Environment

Guardian Bastille coordinated the Connecticut school installation to minimize disruption to the academic calendar. Work was phased room by room and building by building, with scheduling developed around class periods, lunch breaks, and school holidays. Our installation team operated cleanly and efficiently, leaving each classroom fully ready for use immediately after work was completed in that space.

Edge system installation requires precise work at the frame perimeter — a more involved process than standard film application. Guardian Bastille’s team has extensive experience with edge system installation and delivered consistent, high-quality results across every window in the project scope.

Results: Safer, More Comfortable Classrooms

The Ultra Vision 25 solar safety edge system installation has delivered measurable improvements across the Connecticut school. Classrooms are cooler and more comfortable during warm months. Glare on whiteboards and screens is reduced, making teaching and learning easier throughout the school day. And every treated window now provides meaningful glass safety protection — holding fragments in place if broken and resisting penetration under impact.

Energy savings from reduced solar heat gain lower cooling costs during occupied months, contributing to budget performance that school administrators track closely. UV rejection protects classroom furnishings and displayed student work from fading over time.
